“This summer, I interned at Genesis, a fertility clinic where I shadowed Dr. Richard Grazi, founder of Genesis and Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at Maimonides Medical Center. I followed IVF procedures in a laboratory, and I conducted a research project on the effects of embryo grading (morphology), and on the survival of the embryo (percent of successful delivery). This experience gave me a clearer understanding of what in means to be a doctor. I learned how crucial it is to treat every patient with care and to balance the boundaries between being empathetic and doing your job. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Last year, I also was lucky enough to attend Gilda’s Club NYC Writing Workshop of the Narrative Medicine Program at Columbia University. Once a month I took the subway to Greenwich Village to join an intimate workshop of writers. Through interacting with students from all over the city, sharing our personal writing and different perspectives, I was able to grow into a stronger writer and more expressive person.”
