The Falcons’ Nest is the home of our interscholastic athletic program and is an integral part of the Yeshivah of Flatbush experience. Participation as a Flatbush Falcon is a privilege and provides our students the unique opportunity to display derech eretz and midot such as responsibility, teamwork, fair play, loyalty, leadership and sportsmanship within the framework of athletic competition. Research indicates that students who participate in extra-curricular athletics learn how to budget their time more efficiently, score higher academically, are more self-confident and are more likely to make good choices in social settings. Given the demands of the regular school day, Flatbush’s athletic program offers our students an ideal outlet, providing them with the opportunity to display school spirit in a positive manner. The Yeshivah is proud that nearly half of our students take to the competitive arena sporting Flatbush maroon and gold as members of a school team.
We encourage a will to win in all of our athletic settings. But while we strive to win, the greater value is on the development of the person – to exhibit menschlichkeit, giving each student-athlete the opportunity to develop and ultimately fulfill his or her potential as an athlete, a person and a productive member of the greater community. Under the guidance of our experienced coaching staff, the focus is on skill development and teamwork with the goal of continuous improvement as the season progresses.
The High School Physical Education program is designed to inculcate in our students the recognition of how to live a healthy and active lifestyle and cultivate a positive sense of self. Classes provide students with the skills to monitor and assess healthy personal fitness levels and explore advanced concepts in personal fitness skill development. Additionally, students are instructed in individual and team games, complete with skill development and game strategies for success in both types of activity settings. Throughout the school year, the primary focus is on creating a knowledge base for life-long health and fitness and an appreciation for and participation in a lifetime of activity. Classes for boys and girls in grades 9-12 are conducted separately and all students are educated about health and fitness and the importance of an active life style.
This in-house hockey tournament brings together players past and present for a day of competition and learning run in conjunction with the Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Alumni Association. As a part of the committee, students are responsible for helping publicize and promote this event, form teams, raise money and honor the memory of a Yeshivah graduate who loved Torah and Mitzvot as well as hockey.
Members of the “Nest” help spread school spirit by supporting the athletic teams. They also help bring fans to cheer on the Flatbush Falcons at various sporting events. Activities and presentations are in conjunction with Athletic Department.
This incredible experience is held annually for the Boys Junior Varsity basketball team. Three schools from around the country join our Falcons in the Yeshivah in a competitive yet emotional tournament and an inspirational shabbaton in memory of Flatbush principal Thomas Hausdorff A”H. From selling tickets to singing zimirot, students are actively involved in every aspect of the program.
Be the Flatbush Falcon! Sign up to be the Falcon and help cheer on the crowd.
Students don’t have to look far to feel the presence of Marc Sackin A”H, the Flatbush student who died in a car accident days before his graduation. Besides the reminder in our Student Lounge, students commemorate Marc, who was an honors student and Captain of his Varsity Basketball team, by participating in and helping coordinate the event held annually in his name.
Students serve as assistants to the coaching staff, where they learn team management skills, and aid in game day operations.
Students have the opportunity to take an active role in the Falcons public address, broadcast and/or reporting team for live home and select away athletic events.
